Samsung's 16-50mm Power Zoom ED OIS (349.99 USD) is the first compact zoom lens for NX. The lens' retractable design looks similar to that of the 20-50mm f/3.5-55.6 ED, however it does not include the optical stabilization and power zoom mechanisms. Although its narrow aperture will not excite photographers as much as the Samsung 16-50mm F/2-2.8 SED OIS (at Amazon)(Opens new window), it is smaller and more affordable. The 16-50mm Power Zoom will suit you if you want to use a lighter kit with an NX-type mirrorless camera.
It measures approximately 1.2x2.6 inches (HD), is 3.9 ounces in weight, has 43mm front filters and can be used at a distance of 2.9 inches. The lens' field of view measures roughly the same as a full-frame 24-75mm lens. It has a maximum aperture that narrows to f/3.5 at its longest focal length. You can focus at a minimum distance of 9.4 inches. This allows you to get close enough to your subject in order to take images that have a shallow depth-of-field, even with the modest aperture.
The front ring allows you to adjust focal length and focus. Its function changes depending upon whether your camera is set up for autofocus or manual. There are control buttons at the barrel that allow you to zoom in or out. If the lens is paired with an NX compatible body, an iFn button can be used to open an on-screen menu that allows you to change shooting settings.
Imatest was used to verify the quality of the photos taken by the lens with the NX3000 (20-megapixel). It records 2,327 lines per photo height at 16mm on a center weighted sharpness test. This is much better than the 1,800 lines that we use when marking an image sharp. Compact zoom lenses such as this can often cause problems at the edges of images. We've experienced that with Olympus M.Zuiko E 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 Z ($299.99 Amazon). It scores 1,962 lines even though it is f/3.5. Sharpness is slightly better at f/4 (2.402 lines), and resolution peak at f/5.6 (2.552 lines).
The maximum aperture at 24mm narrows to F/4. On a center-weighted test the lens displays 2,422 lines, while the edges show over 2,000 lines. The f/5.6 aperture shows a slight improvement (2,516 lines). It is the same story at 35mm, f/5 (2.655 lines), and f/8 (2.794 lines). The lens score at 50mm f/5.6 scores 2,636 lines. It improves slightly at f/8 (2.755 lines). JPG mode automatically corrects distortion, while Raw will cause distortion of approximately 2.4 percent at 16mm. This lens profile is not yet available in Lightroom, so corrections will need to be made manually.
Samsung's 16-50mm Power Zoom ED OIS kit lens is among the best. The lens is sharp and can be used to capture wide angles and zoom in on classic fields of view. It also has optical stabilization for better images and stable handheld video. It's still a basic kit lens. The f/3.5 to5.6 aperture isn't as good as the prime lenses or pro-level Samsung 16-50mm F/2-2.8. It's better than the Samsung 20-50mm zoom (which lacks optical stablilization) or the Amazon 18-55mm NX StandardZoom ($300.00) which are both noticeably bigger and don't provide as much coverage.
