AC Gears Bonzart Lit Mini (direct $40) is an adorable, small-sized toy camera. It can also be very fun to use. Its image output is akin to that from toy film cameras like the Lomography Diana F+—fuzzy, full of weird optical aberrations, and decidedly low-fi. The Bonzart Lit Mini, unlike the Diana F+ is digital, and you don't need to have film developed. It's a digital camera that looks great with the Lomo style.
It is small and compact, measuring just 1.8x2.5x0.7inches (HWD), and weighing just over 1.1 ounces. The unit we reviewed was in hot pink but you can get it in other colors such as white, blue and black. The controls are very basic. There is only a power button that toggles between recording and image playback when the camera's on, and also a shutter release at the top. Only the rear controls can be used to navigate through menus.
It measures approximately 1.5 inches diagonally and has a 1:1 aspect ratio. This panel is low-resolution and will only give you an idea of the contents of your frame with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The rear of the tiny camera has a standard tripod socket, as well a mini USB port, and a slot for microSD cards. The card slot on the Lit Mini means you should not put it in the hands or children who aren't yet old enough to understand the differences between microSD cards and food. However, the Lit Mini makes a great first camera.
Mini's low-fi photos have a resolution of only 3MP. These images are rough and blurry, with some areas barely focussed, as well as rife in weird color fringing, aberrations, and others. That's not the main point. The Lit Mini digital camera is an affordable alternative to the Lomo.
You shouldn't expect much control or the ability to operate it at low lighting. This camera is a daylight/outdoor model with a 100 ISO. Digital zoom is available but the focal length of the lens' optical field of view is only 60mm. This corresponds to the full-frame equivalent.
There are a few color filters available—I stuck to the Normal mode to see what kind of output the camera would deliver, but you can also shoot in Black and White, or Sepia. You can also use the Negative mode to invert colors.
There's a video mode, but as you would expect it's SD only—the camera maxes out at 480p30 quality. It is an internal battery that can be charged using the USB mini port at the bottom. Although the battery indicator quickly drops to half-full, I managed to snap more than 150 photos in succession without having to recharge it. The camera automatically makes sounds while it shoots, but it turns off when the sounds are turned off.
AC Gear Bonzart Lit Mini camera is fun. It's an affordable way to have low-fi Lomo images without having to worry about film photography. It's not for everyone—if you're after more traditional images, looks elsewhere (our Editors' Choice compact Canon PowerShot Elph 330 HS($349.95 at Amazon) is a good place to start). If it had internal memory, it would make a great first camera. However, if you have children who are at least a year old, it can be a useful tool to encourage them into photography.
