AKASO's EK7000 Pro 4K Action camera promises a more affordable version than the highest-end action cameras, without losing quality photos and video. It is half the cost of the GoPro budget model, but could it be as good or better than the top-of-the-line brand. To find out, we put the EK7000 Pro to the test.

AKASO's EK7000 Pro 4K Action camera looks exactly like an action cam. The camera is very compact, measuring 2.25 feet wide by 1.5 feet tall and 1 foot deep. The lens occupies about a quarter the front, with a small red circle at its edges. You can split the front in two parts, with a matte black plastic underneath the lens and a lined black plastic at the power/mode buttons. Sides are black and textured. On the right, there is an up and down buttons. The left side has a mini-HDMI port and a micro-SD slot. It takes almost the entire back space. You can find the Li-Ion battery in the top slot. After prolonged use, the micro-USB became extremely hot.
You will need more than the camera to capture great action shots and video. A variety of straps and mounts are included with the AKASO EK7000 Pro. These can be attached to many items. Two of the most essential are the plain mount camera and waterproof case. Clear plastic is used for the waterproof case. It has a black clasp at the top and silver buttons which push on to the camera's buttons. To make it waterproof, the door at the back is secured with a clasp. It also has a rubber seal that makes the case water-resistant. Black camera mounts are a rectangular shape that is slightly larger than actual cameras. Camera clips in the frame. The frame also has a tripod support on the top and bottom that can be connected to various clips and mounts.
One of the prongs on the clip snapped after just a few weeks. This is not good news for durability.
It also comes with a simple remote control, about a square inch, with just two buttons—a red photo button and a grey video button. The remote can be attached to something by sliding a strap through the loop. For a sports camera, the plastic clips can be a bit rigid. One of the clips' prongs broke off after just a few weeks. This is not good news for durability. AKASO's EK7000 Pro 4K Action Camera has a limited one-year warranty. However, that information was not included in the package and we had to contact customer service for it.

Attachments are however a completely different matter. To see if it was possible to figure this out ourselves, we initially threw out all of the attachments. Although the EK7000 Pro included a quick-start manual, it did not include any information about different configurations that would work in different circumstances. The full manual did not contain all the necessary instructions. The manual only provided two examples of mounting situations, one for the bike helmet and another on handlebars.
There were a variety of mounting options that we tried, with different degrees of success. We first tried mounting the camera on the handlebars of our road bikes. Although the mount is made to accomplish this, it was not large enough to fit on any of our bikes. The mount didn't work the way it was supposed to. The accessories that were included with the camera didn't work well enough to secure it to the handlebars.
The manual suggested that we try the helmet mount. This included a clip for mounting the helmet, a plate of plastic, and a strap with Velcro. It was much easier than the experience we had with the handlebar mount. The mount also felt solid. Although the plastic plate has an adhesive base, we did not need it to make sure that our camera felt secure while riding on bumpy roads.
A large clip can be mounted to the camera bag so it can be attached to clothes. It was placed on top of our hydration pack and we took it along for an 8-mile run. The camera held its position throughout the intense run. The velcro strap as well as a cam strap were also used to attach the remote. This made it easy to carry the remote on the road, particularly if you have limited hand mobility. It would be nice to have a tripod or selfie stick with this kit.
AKASO's EK7000 Pro 4K Action Camera can take photos at resolutions ranging from 4-16 MP. There are a variety of photo modes available: burst mode (auto), continuous lapse (continuous lapse) and time lapse. No matter how the light was or the way the camera was mounted, every photo that we took turned out to be stunning. The camera shaken so badly that it was impossible to record video, so we relied on the remote for regular and burst modes shots. We couldn't locate the photo where the camera had been shaking when we went through our photos later. You would think it had to have been blurry. Nope. Nope. Every shot was clear even when the camera was shaking. This is the same clarity that you would never find in a comparable priced point-and shoot camera.
Even with the camera shaking, every shot was clear and crisp. This is the same level of clarity that you would never find in a comparable priced point-and shoot camera.
The camera was also tested in low and bright lighting, with the possibility of changing from bright to dark light. Every single one of the photos turned out perfectly. Even a sunset landscape shot was taken, which turned out to be perfect. The experience was amazing. There are four angles modes available: wide, narrow, medium and wide. Although we were concerned that the camera wouldn't allow us to properly aim it while we're on the move, the angle is wider than we expected and captured all the images we needed.
The EK7000 Pro is best in video. The EK7000 Pro can capture high-quality video in a variety of resolutions and frame rates. There are 30 FPS modes available at 2.7K, 1080P and 4K at 25 frames per second. You can choose from slow motion mode at 1080P/60 FPS, 720P or 720P with 60 FPS or 120 FPS. Three different videos were tested. First, we strapped the pack to our legs while running. Although the video was terrible, it wasn't because of its camera. The video just shaken so badly that it was almost nauseating. However, when the Mac paused the video, the image was as sharp and clear as a photograph. Only when we were running under a bridge, the motion blur occurred. The camera focused on the bright side.
We strapped our EK7000 Pro onto a helmet on our bike and went for a spin. It was clear and easy to use. The head mount also provided sufficient stability. Loop mode can record video for loops lasting between 1 and 3 minutes, or 5 minutes. The loop mode writes the next loop when the card becomes full. However, you can save one loop by pressing the shutter button on your remote. This type of action camera is used by many people to record security footage in the event of car or bike accidents. You can choose a loop where you have recorded the incident and let it continue in loop mode.
It was easy to locate swimmers under water thanks to the wide angle lens.
The third and final test we did was underwater video. We went down with triathlon buddies to record their workouts at the local YMCA. To record the swimmers' swimming forms, we used an old selfie stick to attach the waterproof case. The upside-down mode automatically rotated the video, even though the camera was placed upside down. Even with the selfie stick at the bottom of the tester, the wide-angle lens allowed us to easily track swimmers. Although the camera features a diving mode that adjusts color to make it look good under water, the photos still looked fantastic. The slow-motion footage was used to allow the swimmers to analyse the form. We found that the quality of slow-motion videos made it easier for them all to see every detail of their swim form.
However, the EK7000 Pro's battery lasts only a few hours. Although the manufacturer claims that it lasts for 90 minutes, our testing showed that it actually lasted slightly longer. Even though the video lasts just over two hours, it's not enough to capture action shots. AKASO includes a spare battery that you can use in case your primary battery runs out. It is not surprising that the battery takes so little time to charge. Battery life is a pretty common issue amongst action cameras in this range—the GoPro Hero7 has a similar battery life.
AKASO's EK7000 Pro 4K Action Camera comes with a smartphone app called iSmart DV that can pair with it via Wi-Fi. You can view through the lens of the camera from your smartphone. This means that even if the camera is on you, the app will let you view what you are shooting. The app allows you to switch between modes and start/stop the video. You can even transfer files from your camera to your smartphone. The signal drops when the EK7000 Pro is submerged in water. This makes it useless for video or images underwater.
We tried downloading the videos and photos by connecting our AKASO EK7000Pro 4K Action Camera with a computer. It didn't work like normal. The EK7000 Pro is not like other digital cameras. It doesn't import photos or open the photo app. It appears more like a flash drive or SD card. It was strange, but it made it easy to drag photos to any folder without the need to use the photo application as an intermediary.
We then began to rearrange files and folders and change their names. The EK7000 Pro couldn't recognize files which didn't follow the internal naming scheme. It also didn't respond when we tried to place our folders within the default folders 'photo' and 'video. It can be a bit tricky to use the touch screen LCD. The LCD tends to interpret your finger presses higher than they actually are, so it was necessary to deliberately touch the screen lower that the option you wanted. Although it took some time for the screen to become habitual, eventually it did.
AKASO's EK7000 Pro 4K Action camera MSRP is $75. This is the average price for entry-level cameras, however, the additional cost is justified. Although it doesn't have all of the features that premium action cameras offer, it is very well-equipped for its price. It also delivers exceptional image quality.
GoPro Hero7 white:GoPro's most affordable camera, the Hero7 white is more expensive than the AKASO EK7000 Pro 4K action camera. However, the list price for the Hero7 white at $200 makes it almost twice as costly. The camera is durable, waterproof and comes with a waterproof case. It also has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It doesn't come with a battery that can be removed, and you won't be able to use the camera for long periods of time without charging it. This is a major drawback considering how little it has. The Hero7 is $100 less expensive than the EK7000 Pro, and has a slightly smaller feature set.
Yi Action Camera: The Yi Action Camera is priced about the same—the camera and accessory kit go for about $70, but that doesn't include a waterproof case (one is available as a separate purchase). Although it doesn't record 4K or 2K video, the camera can capture fast-moving action at 848x480fps. Although the Yi Action Camera appears to be very similar to the EK7000 Pro in many ways, an in-depth testing might reveal the main differences.
